Advancing Gendered Spatial Design Through Research & Advocacy

D4T—Design for Trans is a research-led consulting practice driving innovation in gendered spatial design. We support trans and gender-diverse communities in shaping public and civic spaces that meet their needs and aspirations.

We collaborate with community members, designers, policymakers, and service providers to create safer, discrimination-free environments in architecture, planning, and governance. Our work prioritises trans voices, ensuring design reflects lived experience.

Dr Simona Castricum
PhD [Arch], BArch [Hons], AIA Associate, 2024 Winner Inaugural Gender Diversity & Equity Prize (Vic Chapter)

With 25+ years of architectural and academic practice, Simona combines transgender lived experience with industry expertise. Her PhD thesis, What If Safety Becomes Permanent: Architecture & Music as a Site of Transing, informs her advocacy for dignity, autonomy, and access in design.

She has collaborated with the Australian Building Codes Board alongside Transgender Victoria and the Australian Institute of Architects on all-gender bathroom reform, with Beyond Bricks & Bars on trans decarceration and the Victorian Pride Lobby. She has consulted for the University of Melbourne, Arts Centre Melbourne, Music Victoria, and the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale (Nordic Pavilion).

Methodology—
D4T operates within a design justice framework, advancing trans and gender-diverse rights in the built environment. We believe dignity, safety, and equitable access are non-negotiable.

Beyond bathrooms, our education, healthcare, justice, housing, airport, infrastructure, and entertainment settings require urgent innovation in gendered spatial design to align with lived experience and evolving legal recognition of gender identity in Australia.
